What should have been a fun field trip to a popular beach quickly turned nightmarish yesterday afternoon when an elevated walkway collapsed in Surfside Beach, Texas.
More than 20 teenagers were hurt, several of whom were hospitalized.
Teens Were with Bayou City Fellowship Summer Camp
The teenagers were part of a group of 80 from Cypress, Tomball, and Spring Branch in Harris County visiting Stahlman Park, a seaside recreation area on the Texas Gulf Coast, with the Bayou City Fellowship summer camp.
The elevated walkway, located at 2211 Bluewater Highway, collapsed around 12:30 p.m. Some witnesses have reported that the teens were gathered for a group picture when the structure gave way.
5 Elevated Walkway Collapse Victims Airlifted to Memorial Herman
According to the Associated Press, 21 kids between the ages of 14 and 18 were hurt, including five airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Six other campers were taken to local emergency rooms via ambulance, and around 10 arrived at hospitals in private vehicles.
While their injuries were said to be non-life-threatening, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center reported on Twitter that additional blood was being delivered to care for victims.
“While this is a traumatic event, we are blessed to report that none of the injuries are life-threatening,” Bayou City Fellowship wrote in a statement, according to ABC-13 in Houston. “We are thankful for the outpour of concern from our community and ask that the city and surrounding areas keep all that are affected physically and emotionally in prayer.”
Stahlman Park Walkway Collapse Under Investigation
An official cause of yesterday’s accident has yet to be determined.
According to The Houston Chronicle, the elevated wood walkway was located outside the Stahlman Park Event Center, which sits on pilings about 11 feet off the ground. After being heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike, the Center reopened in 2010.
Yesterday’s elevated walkway collapse remains under investigation.
