Two Texas men were tragically killed last month, after apparently being overcome by toxic fumes while working at a Pasadena chemical plant.
Deceased Quala Workers Were Cleaning Storage Tanks
The deadly accident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m., as a crew was cleaning storage tanks on the Quala facility located at 5100 Underwood Road in Pasadena.
According to the Harris County Sherriff’s Office, the deceased workers had gone behind an 18-wheeler and never returned. The men, ages 29 and 44, were pronounced dead at the scene not long after being discovered.
A statement from Quala indicated that several other workers were injured in connection with the December 28th incident. However, the company did not specify how many were hurt or disclose the nature of their injuries.
Quala Plant in Pasadena Has History of Safety Violation
Based in Tampa, Florida, Quala specializes in cleaning industrial tanks hauled by trains and trucks. The company operates 70 cleaning and wastewater treatment facilities in the United States and Canada, and acquired the Pasadena, Texas plant after purchasing a division of Alpha Technical Services in 2018.
Last May, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined Quala more than $26,800 in connection with four safety violations at the Pasadena facility. Among other things, OSHA cited problems with employees working in tight spaces.
According to the Houston Chronicle, OSHA opened that case just days after another Quala employee allegedly became ill while cleaning a storage tank on the site. Although the worker survived and was kept under observation for three hours, he purportedly received no medical care during that time and was prevented from washing for an hour after the incident. The man later drove himself to the emergency room, where he was allegedly treated for chemical poisoning.
