The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the August 15th incident around 5:45 a.m. when several people reported an explosion near South Highway 87. First responders arrived on the scene to find the farmhouse engulfed in flames.
“It was like an earthquake,” one nearby resident told CBS 5.”The whole house shook this morning.”
El Paso Natural Gas Co., a subsidiary of Houston, Texas-based Kinder Morgan, later reported that a “pipeline failure” had occurred in Coolidge.
14-Year-Old Girl Among 2 Killed in Kinder Morgan Pipeline Explosion
A woman inside the house was able to flee through a window. She was airlifted to Maricopa Medical Center with severe burns to 50% of her body.
Sadly, her husband and 14-year-old daughter were unable to escape the inferno. Firefighters located their remains once it became safe to enter the building.
Coolidge Police Officer Mark Tercero told Fox10 the deaths are being investigated as homicides “until they can discover a cause.”
NTSB Heading Up Federal Investigation
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the explosion and fire were triggered by the rupture of the 30-inch line. But so far, it’s not known what caused the line to fail.
The NTSB is investigating the blast in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the Arizona Corporate Commission.
The federal investigation is expected to take 12 to 24 months.
