Two contractors working at an Atmos Energy facility in Farmersville, Texas, died tragically yesterday afternoon when the natural gas pipeline they were servicing exploded.
Two other workers were hurt in the blast.
Bobcat Contracting & Fesco Petroleum Workers Were On-Site
The June 28th explosion occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m., as workers from Bobcat Contracting and Fesco Petroleum Engineering were performing maintenance on a pipeline located near State Highway 78 and FM2756 in Farmersville, about 35 miles northeast of Dallas.
The blast was felt by those living nearby.
“It lasted as long as a gunshot wound, but it was really close. It was like a really loud ‘boom’ like an explosion, but I honestly didn’t expect it to be that,” one witness told 5NBCDFW, “No screams, nothing, no smell, nothing.”
“I was in my living room watching TV just relaxing. I heard an explosion, and I felt the shock wave also, and it was simultaneous,” said another.
Multiple Emergency Departments Respond to Atmos Energy Explosion
The Princeton and Farmersville fire departments, Collin County EMS, and multiple other local law enforcement agencies responded to the incident. Although the site was safe, the Collin County Sherriff’s Office urged people to avoid the area last night.
Two workers died at the scene, and two others were rushed to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.
“Our prayers are with those who were affected by the events in Farmersville, Texas, today,” Atmos Energy said in a statement released to media outlets on Monday evening. “Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing any names or additional details at this stage.”
FBI Asked to Process Atmos Energy Explosion Scene
It’s not clear what caused yesterday’s gas pipeline explosion, but authorities believe it was an accident.
An investigation is underway.
According to Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner, the FBI was asked to assist in processing the scene because of their expertise in handling post-blast sites.
