Wellheads a Boating Hazard in Louisiana’s Coastal Marshes
Wellheads are common along the coastal marshes of Southern Louisiana, and they can prove hazardous to marine traffic.
In July 2013, a crew boat came into contact with a wellhead nine miles south of Port Sulphur, Louisiana, causing the wellhead to spew oily water into the surrounding marshland.
“We have had about 20 of these minor spills since the BP oil spill,” Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser told ABC News at the time. “But, they get cleaned up pretty quickly.”
A similar incident occurred in July 2010, when a towing vessel struck an orphaned oil well off the southeastern Louisiana coast, causing the well to spew oil and gas into Barataria Bay.
